PrintInspector™
Crest Solutions PrintInspectorTM
What Is PrintInspector™?
Crest Solutions PrintInspector™ is an in-line high accuracy print verification system for large format labels commonly used by medical device manufacturers. It has been acclaimed as a genuine leap forward in new product development in this area by several of the world's largest medical device manufacturers since its launch in 2010.
In the medical device manufacturing industry it is critical that product labels are accurately printed and verified before being delivered to the patient. The penalties for failure to guarantee that labels are correct when issued to your customers can include product recall, lawsuits, negative publicity and creation of opportunities for your competitors.
Why Is This Product Needed?
The variety of print problems that can occur in fine detail has hindered the ability to meet high industry and public standards of accuracy in the use of labels on medical device packaging. Inspecting for these print problems through human or partial automated/ human systems has been proven to be insufficient, unreliable and creates risk. Implementing PrintInspector™ eliminates this risk.

Key Features

100% Label Inspection
Crest Solutions PrintInspector™ is designed specifically for large format labels in regulated industries and is the only system with the accuracy required for 100% inspection.
Elimination of Human Error
There is too great a risk of human error when manually inspecting labels that contain multiple items to be checked, particularly at high rates of production throughput. In addition, many labels now contain non human-readable items such as 2D barcodes which necessitate electronic checking methods.
Integrated Production Solution
PrintInspector™ is a stand-alone high resolution (400dpi) scanning system that mounts directly onto standard thermal or laser printers and is specifically designed to address verification problems relating to large format labels of up to A4 in size.
Product Overview
Inspecting Common Problems on Printed Labels

Underburn
This occurs when not enough heat is used to thermally transfer print onto the label. If the print is too light it may start to cause a problem when barcodes are scanned. Also, text may become illegible over time.
Overburn
Where too much heat is applied, overburn occurs whereby bars or characters can be printed too thickly. Barcodes may be unreadable because the required wide/narrow ratio cannot be maintained and in extreme cases the text will become illegible.
Diagonal lines or streaks
If the ribbon becomes slightly twisted or warped then it can cause streaks and diagonal lines across the label. PrintInspectorTM checks for these tell-tale blemishes.
Spots or voids
Over time the elements on the print head will burn out and dirt and paper pieces become trapped, this blocks the heat or the ribbon transfer and results in spots or voids on the label.
Poorly defined characters
Printing too fast or using poor quality ribbons will cause this and it is often very difficult to detect with the naked eye. It is particularly problematic with barcodes which need sharp edges on the bars.
Offset or Misplaced Print
If labels are loaded incorrectly then important sections of text can end up being printed correctly but in the wrong place on the label, requiring them to be rejected.
